After fleeing Japanese oppression, An Hee-je settled in China, specifically in Heilongjiang Province, Yian County, Dongjing City, where he took over management of the Balhae Farm. Hundreds of domestic migrant farmers were supported by An Hee-je to achieve independence. The Balhae Farm was the original base for the independence movement.
